With malaria, dengue, and chikungunya cases on the rise in the capital, Aam Aadmi Party’s Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Ankush Narang, lashed out at the BJP government and accused it of turning a blind eye to the health of city dwellers.
Citing the MCD’s latest weekly report, the MCD LoP said that malaria has broken a five-year record, with 33 fresh cases reported in just the past week. He held the government responsible for the surge, citing its failure to take preventive measures. He urged the BJP to at least follow the AAP government’s model of public awareness campaigns to curb seasonal diseases before the crisis deepens further.

Narang said that ever since the BJP came to power in Delhi, no concrete steps have been taken to control these vector-borne diseases. He recalled that when Arvind Kejriwal was the Chief Minister, the government had launched the “10 Hafte, 10 Baje, 10 Minute” campaign, where every Sunday for ten weeks, people were encouraged to spend ten minutes checking their homes for stagnant water. “The campaign was designed to spread awareness about dengue and remind citizens that the season of malaria, chikungunya, and dengue had arrived. People became alert, took precautions, and checked their homes for water accumulation,” he said.
The MCD LoP stressed that since June, AAP has been demanding that MCD release weekly reports on malaria, chikungunya, and dengue, and in case of an outbreak, daily reports should be issued instead of weekly ones.
